Massive breakthrough from the Help Fight Childhood Cancer team

Quote:The research team behind the Help Fight Childhood Cancer project has just published a groundbreaking paper. It reveals seven promising drug candidates - identified with the help of World Community Grid members – for neuroblastoma, one of the most common and dangerous forms of childhood cancer.

The Help Fight Childhood Cancer research team at the Chiba Cancer Center in Japan has discovered drug candidates that show great promise as new treatments for neuroblastoma, one of the most common and dangerous forms of childhood cancer. This breakthrough marks one of the most significant scientific discoveries to date for World Community Grid.

Thanks to the contribution of over 200,000 World Community Grid members, the researchers were able to screen three million compounds and identify seven that destroy neuroblastoma tumors in mice without causing any apparent side effects.

The Chiba team plans to partner with a pharmaceutical company for further development, while also expanding their future work on World Community Grid to address other forms of childhood cancer.

This is one of WCG's biggest breakthroughs, and I thought it deserved a mention. It might not be our wonderdrug cure for cancer, but at least one of those seven must be effective enough, right?

Better late, than never: "Uncovering Genome Mysteries" was launched on WCG. Main goal of the project is to perform comparison between genome sequences and discover new protein functions. Worth to mention that it's the first new project on WCG in 2014 and [partially] lead by team which previously successfully completed "Genome Comparison" project. Join! Twilightsmile

Hi everypony! Today IBM launched yet another project on WCG. This time it's "Outsmart Ebola Together", which targets against the notorious Ebola virus (BTW, did you know that one of disease carriers are fruit bats? Fluttershyouch). The project will be lead by the same organization, which previously finished the "GO Fight Against Malaria" project and still running "FightAIDS@Home", although this time different lab will be involved. "Outsmart Ebola Together" uses AutoDock Vina framework, so the project will be also available on Android-based devices. Join! Yay
